The need to monitor and control systems of ever increasing complexity requires the processing of high-dimensional signals, putting increasing pressure on every stage of the data processing pipeline, from the initial data acquisition to the subsequent storage and analysis. In the signal processing community, such challenges have recently been addressed through a transition from classical “least squares” analysis techniques to more modern sparsity-based approaches, which are collectively known as “compressive sensing” or “compressive signal processing”. In this talk, we review the ideas of compressive signal processing and describe how they can be utilized in problems involving dynamic systems, highlighting some of the similarities and differences in analysis compared to the non-dynamic case.
